Topic: The Vietnam Era
The Vietnam War began in November 1955 and officially ended with the fall of Saigon in April 1975. The Soviet Union and China supported North Vietnam, a Communist force, and the United States (among many other anti-communist forces) supported the South Vietnamese army.
The U.S. had been assisting in Vietnam conflicts since 1950 - after President Truman sent money and supplies to the French. The French had been fighting Viet Minh forces as colonizers of Indochina. Although American money and supplies had been present in Vietnam for over a decade, the first direct U.S. involvement began with President John F. Kennedy. In May 1961, Kennedy sent Army Special Forces personnel to the region to train the South Vietnamese. When President Lyndon B. Johnson decided to engage directly in the war in August 1964, blame forNorth Vietnamese success landed on his shoulders in the public eye. Drafts were instilled to recruit soldiers to fight, which resulted in several intense rebellions on American soil.
