The famous medieval physician Galen fled Rome during the plague. He analyzed his personal morality and decided he had to flee on behalf of his wife and children, whose lives he knew were threatened by the plague. We are told that for the rest of his life, he had nightmares about failing in his professional morality because he had abandoned his patients to certain deaths. In other words, his knowledge and analysis of his personal and professional values, sense of priorities among his duties, and his character collided.

1. If Galen was a physician during a modern-day pandemic, do you think his actions would have been appropriate today? Why?

2. Which responsibility do you think takes priority, caring for his patients or protecting his family? Explain your reasoning.
