A serious issue when considering and understanding the nature of hate crime victim (who are the most likely targets, where they often occur, and the injuries associated with them) has to do with the methods of collecting data on hate crime incidents. As your readings discuss, we can use official methods like police reports, but those undercount the true value of hate crimes in the United States as evidenced by data from the National Crime Victimization Survey, or NCVS.

What are the methods that are used to measure the number of victims of hate crimes? What are the advantages and disadvantages of these methods? If you were a researcher who wanted to study hate crime victimization, how would you go about conducting a study?
