Assignment:
Review discussion questions from this week's posts and choose one to write a response COPY AND PASTE the question from the discussion board into your post for this week. A credit response: - clearly answers the question - includes class materials, outside sources, and discussion (is not just "that's interesting" or "I agree") - meaningfully expands on the prompt by adding original thought The U.S. has often taken a different approach to Israeli invasions of Gaza due to geopolitical interests, its close alliance with Israel, which supports Israels right to defend itself, and domestic political factors due to a large portion of the U.S. electorate supporting Israel. From a functionalist perspective, conflict helps maintain social order by creating and reinforcing social, religious, or national boundaries (Leon-Guerrero, 2022).
Using this perspective, the U.S. viewed Israeli invasions of Gaza as a right that helps maintain social order, even though these invasions were extremely harmful and resulted in the death of many people. A conflict perspective would contradict the functionalist perspective. Through this view, the invasions of Gaza are seen as an act of domination over an oppressed group. U.S. militarism has been known to favor the power, economic, and political interests, which favors the Israeli invasions because the U.S. has close alliances and geopolitical interests with Israel.
Finally, a feminist perspective would view the invasions of Gaza as a patriarchial tool used by Israeli to create new structures of dominance and subjugate a large mass of people (Leon-Guerrero, 2022). America, I would argue, is still a largely patriarchal society and follows economic and political interests even when those interests subjugate groups of people. These perspectives shed light on the different sociological views of war as well as faults in American military relations. They demonstrate different perspectives countries take and show faults and areas for improvement in America's involvement in foreign wars and politics.
1. What sociological perspective do you think America favors the most in war relations?
2. How can America better support foreign wars without overstepping?
