Assignment:
You will be watching a very informative (classic) video, "I Feel So Ugly: Body Dysmorphic Disorder." It lasts almost 50 minutes, but well worth it as you learn about this disorder and the impact it has on the individuals and their families. You will see the personal stories of Elizabeth, Jason, Patrice, Scott, and Michelle. After reading the section in your text about BDD (pp 166-167 for the basic description) and watching the video, answer the questions that follow.
1. BDD was originally called "imagined ugliness." Do you think a person with BDD would take many selfies? Why or why not? (Use information from the text or video to support your answer).
2. Katharine Phillips, an authority on BDD and featured in the video, wrote a book titled, "The Broken Mirror." Explain this title in terms of BDD.
3. In the video Doug (who experienced BDD later in life) said NO WAY! to cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT) and was fine just taking medication. As his therapist, what would you tell him about CBT and facing his fears? (I'm looking for a little information about CBT and what you know about facing fears).
4. Comment on the role of social media and the emphasis on physical appearance for both males and females. Do you think the incidence of BDD will go up in the future? Why or why not.
