Problem: Suppose you are hiking in Africa and you find an undiscovered tribe of people. No one has ever come across this tribe before and the tribe has never seen any outsiders. After some initial shock, the tribe welcomes you and you soon learn that this tribe has a peculiar ritual: it has an altar and sacrifices some of their otherwise normal and healthy babies to a god. One day you see the tribe gather in order to begin the ritual. A baby girl is about to be killed upon the altar. But you notice that as the tribe is bowing and has their heads down, there is just enough time for you to grab the baby girl off the altar, run into the jungle and escape without harm to you or the baby. What do you do? Do you grab the baby and run, or do you accept this practice and ritual as morally acceptable, part of a foreign culture, and observe from a distance? What values govern your decision? Again, stick with the thought experiment as is and do not change the variables, the "ingredients."
