Problem: The westward movement discussion begins with the well known concept of manifest destiny, remarks on the the fact that Indians were less of a threat on the Oregon Trail than the life out there itself, and includes the settlement of what would become the Lone Star State (leaving out that some of the earliest settlers there were slave owners coming from Connecticut - thus Texas was started by Yankees!). The Mexican American War was hotly debated. Precipitated by James K. Polk who "created" the situation and thus "right" to declare war by sending General Zachary Taylor and his troops into what would 100% be fighting and casualties (he even declared war based on deaths days before those deaths even occurred - hmmmm) the death toll eventually rose to 15,000. U.S. Grant, Abraham Lincoln, Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson and a whole host of others protested it as being illegal, immoral, unnecessary and costing too many American lives. Based on the reading and this information, do you feel it was a war we should have gotten into?
