A man enters the pharmacy with a prescription for Ritalin, a central nervous system stimulant, for his 12 year old daughter. After further questioning and discussion with the guardian it is found that the prescription is not being prescribed for its intended, or "on label use." The father states that his daughter has always struggled with her weight and he sought out a doctor that would write the prescription after hearing from several of his friends that ADHD medications are currently being used to assist individuals in weight loss. (this is called an "off label or unintended use)

*In this case (true story...happened to me!) the pharmacist refused to fill the prescription, informed the doctor of the inappropriate intended use and the guardian of the refusal to fill. The guardian was counseled on appropriate drug use and consequences of misuse, and the daughter was referred to a nutritionist for a consult.
