In response to the acquittal of O.J. Simpson, Professor Paul Butler advocated for racially based jury nullification. He stated, "It is the moral responsibility of black jurors to emancipate some guilty black outlaws" (as cited in Delgado & Stefancic, 2000, p. 195). Professor Randall Kennedy raised objections to Professor Butler's views on a number of grounds, including that playing the race card in a criminal trial is "virtually always morally and legally wrong" (as cited in Kennedy, 1997, p. 256).
