Question: Donald Hughes argues that "Whether through design or by accident, the Greeks believed, the environment has great influence over mankind," even though some Greek writers "saw the human species as able to alter the world as no other creature can" (pp. 59, 60). Many Romans, Hughes writes, shared the belief that "the environment shapes the people who live within it," but "Counterposed to the idea that the natural environment determines the expression of human nature is the idea that mankind can change the environment" (p. 96). Based on your critical reading, which view (i.e. the environment shapes human nature/character or humans shape the environment) do you believe is more prominent or persuasive?Why.

The civilization of Ancient Greece lasted for maybe 500 years or more. The Roman Empire lasted 1000 years. Ultimately, however, despite their respective cultural, economic, political and military achievements, neither civilization lasted forever. If the success of a civilization is marked by expansion -- in terms of population and territory -- and exploitation -- of land and resources -- does this mean, in your opinion, that ALL civilizations are inevitably doomed to eventual collapse? Explain your answer carefully.
