Most Americans make regular choices on what to eat based on what options are familiar, attractive, convenient and inexpensive. Perhaps most people would also disapprove of the conditions of many or most animals on contemporary farms, as well as their passage through slaughter. Imagine that you have two choices at the store/restaurant: one is chicken/pork that came from pigs with a sad and scary life on an "intensive" farming operation that lead to trucking to an industrial slaughterhouse, while the other is chicken/pork that came from a more traditional farm with animals on some kind of open pasture that were then slaughtered as humanely as reasonably possible. Say that the open-pasture meat costs 3 times as much.

  1. Do you approve of buying the intensively produced meat?
  2. If you choose the intensively produced meat, are you participating in the practice of treating the animals that way?
  3. If we support the practices behind the products we buy with our dollars and market choices, what kind of responsibility do we have for these practices?
