The Judicial Branch of the United States government is absolutely fascinating. As Krutz and Waskiewicz (2021) noted, it is the branch within the democratic system of the United States that must balance the collective well-being and individual freedoms of the citizens. Throughout the past 230+ years since the ratification of the United States Constitution, the role of SCOTUS has expanded. During this time, especially after the Civil War, there have been numerous notable, landmark cases that have expanded the rights of American citizens.
For this Reflection Journal, select a landmark SCOTUS case that is important to you and reflect upon its importance and its impact on the society. Not sure where to start? Take a look at the landmark cases noted in Lesson 6 lecture and additional resource links found in Websites and Videos of Interest in Lesson 6.
Once you have selected your SCOTUS case, consider the following questions for your Reflection Journal:
1. What was this case about?
2. Do you agree with the majority or minority opinion?
3. Why is this case important to you?
4. How does this case impact society?
