Assignment:
In a recent lecture I discussed the history behind the recent decision by the Supreme Court of the United States (hereafter SCOTUS) to overturn the landmark Roe V. Wade (1973) decision that guranteed the right for U.S. women to have abortions and the potential impact that the decision could have. In that lecture (which is now available in the "Course Documents" folder on Blackboard) I discussed, among other things, how the decision to overturn Roe V. Wade is highly unpopular with the majority of U.S. citizens, roughly two-thirds of which opposed overturning it and believe abortions should be legal. I also discussed how the only major demographic group in the U.S. in favor of overturning Roe V. Wade were white Evangelical Christians, who by some accounts only make up roughly 14% of the overall population. I also discussed how laws banning abortions would likley disproportionately impact poorer women and women of color, and how the decision is already impacting state laws.
For this assignment I want you to answer the following two questions in a total of 150 words or more. Hence, you do NOT have to provide at least 150 words in answering each question.
1) Do you agree with SCOTUS's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade? Explain why or why not?
2) Do you think in general that the laws of a country should reflect the preferences of the majority of its citizens? Explain why or why not?
