Prompt:

Utilitarianism and Kant's Deontology remain the two most popular approaches to ethics among contemporary philosophers. In many ways, there are complete opposites. Utilitarianism defines moral goodness in terms of performing whatever actions increase the net happiness of those affected by what we do (or decrease their net suffering, as the case may be). Whereas, Kant's deontology defines moral goodness in terms of doing actions we have a duty to perform regardless of whether those actions make people happy or cause them pain. Do you agree with Kant that some actions are intrinsically right (like telling the truth) and wrong (like committing murder)? Or do you agree with Utilitarianism that we always must judge the morality of an action by its consequences? (One way to think about this question is to consider whether telling the truth is wrong in cases when more happiness can be achieved through telling a lie or whether committing murder is right in cases when many other lives can be saved through that action.)
