Assignment: In April, Governor Abbott directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management to charter buses to transport migrants from Texas to Washington, D.C. In August, the Governor added sanctuary cities New York City and Chicago as additional drop-off locations. "Because of President Biden's continued refusal to acknowledge the crisis caused by his open border policies, the State of Texas has had to take unprecedented action to keep our communities safe," said Governor Abbott. "In addition to Washington, D.C., New York City is the ideal destination for these migrants, who can receive the abundance of city services and housing that Mayor Eric Adams has boasted about within the sanctuary city. I hope he follows through on his promise of welcoming all migrants with open arms so that our overrun and overwhelmed border towns can find relief."
Critics have described the program as both a political stunt and inhumane. "It's clear that Gov. Abbott is attempting to make this into a political prop using people who are seeking to live the American dream as the prop for him, and it's just really unfortunate. It's inhumane, it's un-American and it's unethical," said New York City Mayor Eric Adams. "Gov. Abbott has confirmed what unfortunately many of us already had known, that he is a man without any morals, humanity or shame," Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said.
