Prompt:

Fredrick Douglass and Jamie O'Neill both write essays about the impact and importance that education had on their lives. Though different in many ways, both men make valid, questionable, and emotional appeals for their audiences to consider. It can be argued that both of these mens lives would have been extremely different without education. In opposition, the late Steve Jobs, former CEO of Apple Inc., once notably claimed that "people don't read anymore." Considering the ever growing advancements of technology (phones, internet, TV, gaming, etc.) Is he correct? We are living in a post-literate world, one in which people merely skim rather than engage in concentrated reading-for pleasure or for knowledge- because formal education is no longer deemed necessary or important.
Do you agree or disagree with this idea that education is becoming obsolete? Why or why not? And how does Job's comment reflect or contradict your own experiences with reading?
Focus on ONE side of the argument (agree or disagree with the question) and provide examples from Douglass, O'Neill, and personal experience to back up your arguments. Note: Be sure that Douglass and O'Neill appear in your essay regardless if you agree with them or not.
