Paper 1 prompts
The paper should be about 750 words, in addition to the Modern Language Association heading information and any short quotations you may choose to use. Your essay should have an introduction (with a thesis), 3 body paragraphs, and a conclusion in order to be eligible to earn a grade of C+ or better.
Pick only ONE prompt on which to create a carefully-thought-through, well-written essay.
Prompt 1: Roger Cohen begins his essay "The Meaning of Life" with a question: "What's life for?" (406). In your essay, answer his question. Do not play with the notion that different people have different answers (or say it is all a matter of opinion). Tell the reader your answer and explain it.
Prompt 2: Do you agree or disagree with Cohen's answer to the question with which he begins his essay? Why?
Prompt 3: Consider Cohen's use of adjectives. What do they do for his essay? Be specific.
Prompt 4: Does Cohen present a compelling argument? You should consider whether Cohen uses the rhetorical appeals of ethos, pathos and logos well and whether there are flaws in his argument. You may choose to emphasize some of these aspects of argumentation over others because you have only about 750 words to work with.
Why are we doing this? To practice the writing process and writing skills while reading an essay that asks a universal human question.
