In this course, I have discovered that many of my values and perspectives align with those required to be a competent counsellor. According to Shebib (2020), counsellors should believe in the worth and dignity of all individuals, respect their right to make their own choices and advocate for systemic change to support those who are oppressed or mistreated. I recognize that my worldview may differ from my clients, so I prioritize self-awareness, avoid assumptions, respect diversity, and am culturally curious (Shebib, 2020).
Today I took an online personality test and discovered that my strongest traits are agreeableness and openness. I was encouraged because I believe these are beneficial traits of a counsellor. However, a study determined that therapists with above-average agreeableness and openness scores had clients with poorer treatment outcomes for anxiety and depression clients (Delgadillo et al., 2020). High levels of agreeableness are often associated with empathy. However, being agreeable could make it difficult to provide necessary yet critical feedback to clients or address potentially challenging or controversial topics in therapy due to a desire to be liked or avoid conflict (Shebib, 2020). This is an area that I will need to be cognizant of in the future when developing therapeutic relationships with future clients.
Do therapists who share similar personality traits as their clients build stronger therapeutic alliances or possibly have more favourable treatment outcomes?
