Essay Questions
1. In the reading 6.1 (page 363), Huxham and Vangen detail seven perspectives on collaborative management and decision-making which illustrate the many conditions and circumstances that practitioners face and must contend with.
But the truly provocative statement from the article comes at the end of the article when they state: "One definite conclusion can, however, be drawn: Making collaboration work effectively is highly resource-consuming and often painful. The strongest piece of advice to managers that derives from the discussed perspectives, therefor is 'don't do it unless you have to" (p.375)
Do you agree or disagree...and if not collaboration, than what approach do you adopt?
2. Stressful conversations are common and most individuals dread them to the point of avoiding them.
Yet avoidance won't move a problem or issue towards resolution...and could make conditions worse.
In reading 6.3 (page 382), Weeks offers that all of her techniques for handling stressful conversations come down to "three deceptively simple ingredients....clarity, neutrality, and temperance."
Each of us have had stressful conversations. Do the suggestions offered by Weeks make sense, would they have made a difference in conversations you've been part of?
