English Screenwriter Research Paper Assignment -
The Assignment -
You have been hired to do some research for a famous screenwriter (or director), who is planning to film a movie in Prince George. For this assignment, a screenwriter has hired you to compile some preliminary research that will help him/her bring historical accuracy to the time, place, and life of his/her main character. This "Screenwriter Research" assignment combines history (details about a specific place and time), biography (details about a person/character), and bibliography (research materials including books, newspapers, magazines, and online sources).
Process for this assignment:
1. IMAGINE: Think up a movie idea that focuses around a specific main character. You don't need to know or explain the whole story line, but you will need to provide a synopsis of the movie for your report. Consider what the general plot and theme will be and also who the main character is to be (e.g. a romance in which a punk rock teenage boy falls in love with a girl who rides horses and listens to country-western music; a sci-fi comedy movie where a Martian lands in PG, in a certain year, and needs to learn and dress the part of a redneck to get along...). Have some fun making with this movie idea!
2. Choose a birthday/year within 5 year of your birth year, between 1980-2000, for the time when the movie takes place. The year you choose will provide the focus of your report and be the basis for your research. You can choose a year that has some sort of significance for you (e.g. one of your favourite bands was at its height or there was some particular world event that serves as a catalyst for the plot or action of the movie). Or you can pick your own birth day and year and see where your research takes you and what kind of ideas it provides.
3. Plot a Strategy for your research: What information does the screenwriter need for this particular movie? Which kinds of details are important to help him/her bring the character, time and place to life?
Further regarding place and time, the screenwriter wants details of what the city was like but also what was going on in the world at large, particular those things (political and cultural) that might have had some relevance in the protagonist's life but also that might play into or enhance the plot of the movie.
4. Collect your data and keep track of in a File System: Remember: More is better! Find as many interesting items and sources as you can, even if you are not sure how you will use them. A grant film idea or detail may well come out of sources you weren't necessarily looking for. When you find something interesting, be sure to make copies for yourself (email links or online sources, photocopy from books and magazines). Be sure to copy all information you need for your works cited (including page numbers).
5. Plot an Outline for your Report: You can write up this research as either a letter or a report to the screenwriter. Your introduction should provide a summary/synopsis (perhaps as it has been given to you by the screenwriter) of the movie plot and characterization(s). This synopsis should be 200-300 words long.
For the reminder of your letter/report, you can (if you choose) use headings for different aspects and sections of your research. Think about an order for presenting the material that would make best sense for the screenwriter who has hired you. What research details are of major importance? Will you start or end with those?
To summarize the scope of this assignment...
You will be making up a movie idea and character, but the research about clothes, activities, world news, music, tv shows, cars, etc., is factual (i.e., based on research sources). Your research will be based primarily from the sources I have listed. You will use the sources by quoting, summarizing and paraphrasing information and referencing using proper MLA format.
