Assignment:

Sport and religion have been partnered through much of history. If nothing else, this fact speaks strongly to the symbolic power of sport, which provides a place where poignant religious meanings can be publicly expressed and rehearsed. The power and visibility of sport also make it a useful tool for religious education and even religious conversion, and this fact was not lost on 19th century British missionaries.

Is this still the case today? Do religious organizations still use sport to proselytize, educate, and inspire? To answer this question, begin by researching the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Then look for other organizations that engage in similar activity, as well as journals devoted to sport and spirituality. Based on your findings, what conclusions can you draw? Does the sport-religion connection still exist? If so, is it still robust? Which religions seem most inclined to partner with spot?
