"As a native of eastern Nebraska, I grew up believing that the way I spoke was the norm, not just in my region but for the entire country," writes Matthew J. Gordon, professor of English at the University of Missouri - Columbia. Professor Gordon goes on to explain that an introductory linguistics class shattered his "linguistic illusions". He discovered that he did indeed speak a dialect. He learned that he had the same vowel in "thought" and "lot". That he was "missing" a vowel gave him some Midwestern embarrassment!
