Question: We have spent some time putting some of the historical Native American cultures into the context of this course. But what do these cultures look like today? All societies evolve over time. It was mentioned that many Native Americans have left the reservations and moved to cities. This is partly due to the changing ethnic identity of these tribes. Many traditional languages are disappearing due to acculturation and the choice of people to participate in both traditional Native American societies and contemporary American society. How does this affect their food cultures? As you read through the chapter, did you think about how the dual participation of Native Americans might influence the food culture of all members of a tribe, not just those who live in a different place. When thinking about historical food ingredients, do those ingredients and the meals made from them still exist within a tribe? What about the nutritional value of foods eaten by Native Americans, especially those living on reservations?
