Question

Eleanor Walker is a 68-year-old, day 2, following a fractured neck of femur repair. Her haemoglobin is 76 g/L and she has no significant ongoing blood loss, but is dizzy and short of breath on mobilising. She has a history of ischaemic heart disease and cardiac failure. One unit of blood is prescribed, with a plan to review her clinical status post transfusion to determine if further units are indicated. Single unit transfusions: Are unlikely to increment the haemoglobin level sufficiently Mean that the transfusion was not necessary Are always indicative of inappropriate practice Are considered best practice in stable non-bleeding patients.
