Discussion on In every industry, descriptive representation is important to helping ensure diversity of backgrounds and ideas within the industry, but also to ensure that children feel that their 'group' is represented and welcome in whatever industry they are interested in entering themselves as they grow up. Specifically in the media industry, the diversity of backgrounds and perspectives becomes especially important. This ensures that media outlets correctly identify important stories that they should cover, while a media company with a lack of diversity could be completely unaware of the importance of a story to a particular group, probably a minority group. A lack of diversity in news-making could also hurt a news organization's credibility among groups that are not represented, hurting the companies viewership and revenue. Lastly, it is a bad look for any company to be labeled as racist or un-diverse, especially a company that is so public like most media is. The only way that lack of diversity can be changed would be for executives of news media companies to prioritize diversity from the top down in their organization.
