Is it possible that Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) play a role in chronic disease? In this week's lesson, we learned that some of the leading causes of death in the United States are from chronic diseases, notably the following, which are linked to the CDC.?
Heart disease Links to an external site.
Some cancers Links to an external site.
Stroke Links to an external site.
Diabetes
Let's take a look at this from a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice viewpoint. Think about the SDOH domains we learned about. Using the links provided, research two of the leading causes of death in the US, and relate this to access to food, education, economic stability, neighborhood, health care system, or community/social support. Can you find connections linking chronic disease and Social Determinants of Health? Form your responses by keeping the following in mind:?
Diversity: Who is/isn't represented when we discuss chronic diseases, and what can we do about it? How do we change it? ?
Equity: What are some assumptions made around chronic diseases, and their role as leading causes of death in the U.S.? ?
Inclusion: Who is/isn't included? What can we do so that the environment is more welcome for everyone, focusing on those particularly excluded? ?
Justice: Choose one of the following: 1. public policy; 2. institutional practices; or 3. cultural messages and discuss what is needed to minimize chronic diseases as being leading causes of death in the United States.
Be sure to choose one domain from the Social Determinants of Health:
Economic stability
Neighborhood
Education
Food
Community/Social Support
Healthcare System
For the chosen domain, speak to each of the following: Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice.
