General Description of the Task
• This is a take home assignment. You are required to answer the questions distributed to confirm your knowledge in relation to the unit BSBSUS501. You may refer to your training materials and/or conduct further research while completing the answers.
• Answers must be in your own words based on your understanding from class lectures and from the internet. Originality is much appreciated and will fetch better marks than copying directly from the textbooks and other sources. Students will also be tested orally before being awarded the marks.
• All the tasks should be completed by the students within the stipulated time as instructed by the lecturer.
• Marks allocated for the exercises will be based on the completion of problems, effort and commitment shown by the student and not purely based the final answers provided.
Description of the Task
Read the scenario and answer the following questions.
Scenario
You work for PSY Hardware, a computer hardware company which has 5 branches. Your company develops/supports various hardware.
The general manager has decided to develop a range of sustainability initiatives for the hardware business to reduce environmental impact and set a good example for their branches.
Develop workplace sustainability policy
1. Identify the scope of the policy and explain why you think it is appropriate.
2. With the initiative of PSY Hardware to focus on the environmental sustainability policy, list two benefits of sustainable practise that would be considered.
3. Make a list of three people you will consult when developing the sustainability policy for PSY Hardware.
4. Explain in detail how these people can be suitable avenues for consultation.
5. Identify three possible stakeholders for PSY Hardware and explain why you think they are stakeholders.
6. List five strategies you would include in the sustainability policy for PSY Hardware to raise awareness, provide training and promote the policy.
7. Consider the following two sustainability initiatives from PSY Hardware program.
7a. Creating their own environment-friendly hardware so the staff can be involved in developing and using the hardware.
7b. Asking all employees to practice ‘reduce, re-use and recycle' items.

20. The sustainability policy of asking all employees to reduce, re-use and recycle items, created problems for the PSY hardware as not all employees are doing their part. Employees are complaining about time spend for thinking to reduce, reuse and recycle the components

2. Provide two examples of where you would need to apply your knowledge of WHS legislation requirements in a manufacturing company setting
3. (a) Using the table provided below, identify three WHS policies in a manufacturing company and suggest the most appropriate way to communicate these policies to the relevant stakeholders.
(b) Name 2 records that they must maintain and monitor to meet their WHS legislative obligations.
(c) Identify 2 responsibilities that health and safety representatives may have in this organisation.
(d) Describe two strategies that could be used to make sure appropriate WHS information is communicated to all workers effectively, regardless of linguistic or cultural background.
TASK 2 (Case Study)
A major food catering company in Singapore has 40 staffs working in the various food manufacturing processes. With the increasing demand for ready-cooked food, staff fatigue becoming an increasing problem. Senior management at the company consulted a Health and Safety specialist to deliver an internal training program on managing fatigue.
Management has also solicited advices on how to improve the current health and safety participation rate as there has been very little input from the staff.
The Health and Safety Consultant identifies the following barriers and/or constraints to health and safety participations:
• Staff work excessive hours, and many have demanding KPIs and tight deadlines to meet.
• Little time is spent at the production area with other colleagues.
With these barriers and/or constraints in mind, you have been asked to provide recommendations on how the company can implement programmes to increase the participation rate among its staff.
1. List three arrangements the company could make to increase the involvement of the staff in health and safety matters.
2. Provide two suggestions that the company could use to resolve the issues of staff fatigue through participations and consultations.
3. List three ways that the company could provide information to keep the staff informed of health and safety outcomes.
TASK 3
You are a student of AAC. You are required to tour the college and identify two tasks or processes in your college that requires WHS risk control intervention and specialist advice.
1. Describe the tasks or processes in detail.
2. Describe three safety issues that you have identified.
3. Use the internet to locate a specialist WHS consultant who should be able to provide relevant information and propose any required changes. Write down the name & contact details of the person or organisation.
4. Write a report to the management of AAC to explain two strategies to ensure new hazards are not created when proposed changes occur in the workplace.
TASK 4
1. You have been employed as the Health and Safety Manager of National Semiconductor Singapore. One of your responsibilities is their assembly line that operates in a clean room environment. You are to conduct induction training to a batch of new workers regarding workplace health and safety. List four (4) relevant topics that you believe should be included as part of this induction training.
2. Identify three (3) problems that the PCBU may have if they do not provide adequate training.
3. Identify two (2) types of WHS records that must be completed and maintained by your organisation that apply to your work area.
4. Give two (2) reasons why it is important to maintain WHS records.
5. What is meant by ‘continuous improvement' in the context of WHS in this assembly section?
