The letters of the Lin Zexu and the views of Matthew Perry during his expedition both involve very condescending opinions of another's culture.

While it's easy to criticize both in retrospect by appealing to the ideals of multiculturalism, we also tend to praise those who stick up for what they believe and try to reform what they see as moral failings within a given culture.
