Full Circle Design is a medium-sized interior design company based in Pretoria. The company was established in 1983 and has been providing a first-class interior design service for retail and commercial companies across South Africa. The company was started by Roberto Castro, who has worked as a qualified architect for the past 15 years. After his retirement in 2012, his son, Phillip, took over the business.
Phillip's management style was quite different from his father's, and it was not long before some of the older generation employees started to resign. According to most of the staff members, Mr Roberto Castro was a "very gentle boss" to work for and always tried to help the workers. They described Phillip as a tyrant who was only interested in making money. Phillip knew what the workers were saying behind his back. He also knew that the company had not made any profit in the five years before this father retired. During these last few years his father was no longer as actively involved in the business as before. Currently the company is providing jobs to 75 full-time and 33 part-time employees.
You, as a well-known OD practitioner, was called into the business by the newly appointed financial director, Mr Mashapa. According to him, the company needed to improve morale among all the workers, and he asked you to design an appropriate intervention. As you spoke to Mr Mashapa, the complexity of the problem became even more apparent.
