Brief Course Description

This course introduces digital electronics and microelectronics, and exposes further the use of diodes, transistors and other devices in the field of electronics. The course covers digital algebra, logic gates and families, flip-flops, combinational and sequential circuits, A/D and D/A conversions, memory and display device interfacing.

Course Objectives

The Course aims to:

1. Introduce the underlying concepts of digital electronics

2. Apply the concept of Boolean Algebra to solve digital electronics equations

3. Teach the application of basic laws and theorems of digital logic systems

4. Equip students with the skills in the application of logic gates, flip-flops, combinational and sequential circuits in the design of digital systems

5. Enable students to construct, test and troubleshoot digital circuits.

Course Outcomes

At the end of the course, students should be able to:

• Distinguish between analogue and digital electronics

• Identify and distinguish between the various types digital systems

• Work with different number systems, Boolean algebra, and its application to logic functions.

• State the basic laws and theorems of digital logic systems and apply them in solving problems of simple logic circuits.

• Apply logic gates and families, flip-flops, combinational and sequential circuits, A/D and D/A conversions, memory and display device interfacing in the design of digital systems.

• Construct, test and troubleshoot logic circuits, flip-flops, combinational and sequential circuits.
