Question
Displaying Religious Themed Student Work in Class The First Amendment provides students with the right to express their religious beliefs, even in the classroom. Haynes and Thomas state, "students may express their beliefs about religion in the form of homework, artwork, and other written and oral assignments free of discrimination based on the religious content of their submissions" (2007, p. 53). There should be no issues when a student displays their religious beliefs in an assignment, as long as it is related to what was asked by the teacher. Regarding this issue, there have been several court cases in which the First Amendment was violated by schools and courts have had to decide on what is constitutional or not. The case of Lynch v. Donnelly (1984), was argued by Donnelly in which he disagreed of a nativity scene being placed in the city's public shopping center. Christmas décor included this nativity scene and Donnelly believed that the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment was violated. "The Court found that the display, viewed in the context of the holiday season, was not a purposeful or surreptitious effort to advocate a particular religious message" (Oyez, n.d.). It was decided that there was no violation of the First Amendment and that the nativity scene displayed historical origins of the presented holiday. This case displayed how demonstrating religion in a public sector did not violate the rights of the First Amendment. give me similar answer.
