Question

In research, vulnerable population refers to a population who lacks the ability to fully understand and fully consent to be a participant in a study or those whose options are limited and may be subject to coercion. The Tuskegee Syphilis study was a controversial one because it was considered ethically wrong. The population who participated in the study were African American sharecroppers and farmers with syphilis. They are considered vulnerable because they are in extreme poverty and had no access to formal education, which is why everyone was illiterate, which means they are not able to fully comprehend to what they were consenting to. Considering their impoverished status, they are also vulnerable in that they don't have access to healthcare as well due to the disparities with the socio-economic status.
