Question
Batten Disease Lysosomes work with enzymes to break down fats, sugars, proteins and dead cells. In a Lysosomal storage disease (LSD) the lysosomes cannot break these down causing a build up in the cell. The build up can become toxic and it can begin to damage other cells and the organs the cells make up including the brain, heart, skin , central nervous system (CNS) and the skeletal system. Between 1 in 40,000 to 1 in 60,000 people have a LSD (Professional 2021) .While any ethnicity can get a LSD it is more common in eastern European Jewish people and Finnish people. Battens Disease is only obtainable if both patients have the mutated gene and pass it along to their child. Battens disease is a group of 13 fatal diseases. this disease when the lysosomes cannot metabolize the waste in the cell and the build up becomes toxic to the CNS. It is rare for an adult to have Battens disease because majority of the symptoms being in early childhood. The earlier the symptoms being the shorter the life expectancy becomes. However, if the symptoms being in adulthood the life expectancy does not change. Symptoms include but are not limited.
