Case 1: Gupta vs. Khanna
Gupta and Khanna own houses on adjacent plots of land. Mr. Gupta has been transferred by his company and is selling his house. Gupta also owns half a plot between his plot and the Khanna's plot, which is too small to construct anything meaningful.
Gupta wishes to sell his half plot to Khanna, because the purchaser of his house is not interested in the half plot, and Khanna is the only possible purchaser who would be interested. Khanna would like to purchase the plot because he wishes to add onto his house, which is next to the plot line.
Gupta and Khanna are not on talking terms because they are culturally very different. Khannas are a business family and are loud people, who like to invite many visitors to their house and often the parking spots on the street have been occupied by those visitors. They eat non-vege- tarian food often and the bones in the garbage are often littered by the street dogs and some- times also in front of Guptas' house. All this has pissed off Gupta, he has had multiple con- frontations with Khanna on these issues. Guptas on the other hand are service class people and are very reserved, pure vegetarians, and happy to remain indoors most of the time.
There is a large bargaining zone (Rs. 500,000/- to Rs. 20,00,000/-), but neither party is aware of the other party's interests.
You live in the house in front of them and have excellent family relations with both Guptas and Khannas. Guptas have approached you to mediate the sale of the joint plot between the house of Guptas and Khannas.
