Discussion 1 -

Write at least 7 sentences

Please introduce yourself to the class and share what you hope to gain by taking psychology. What's your name? Where are you from? What degree are you working toward? When do you plan to graduate? Feel free to add any other fun facts related to your work, family, pets, hobbies, etc.

As we start to study psychology, some students wonder, "If I'm not a Psychology major, why do I need this class?" It's a fair question, and educator Kendra Cherry has some answers. Please read her essay, "Why Do You Have to Take a Psychology Class?"

Cherry shares three key benefits that students get from studying psychology:

- Better understanding of other people.

- Better understanding of yourself.

- Improved critical thinking-a key to good decision-making.

Choose ONE (1) thing you'd like to gain from this class. In the discussion, share how that benefit may help you toward your professional or personal goals.

Discussion 2 -

Do you have free will? Or does your brain chemistry make decisions for you?

This week you're learning about the electrochemical reactions that happen every time you think, feel, sense, or act. So does that mean you are not in charge? Does body chemistry direct your choices and eliminate your control?

This TED video explains the specific ways caffeine affects your mood, alertness, and performance, all through your nervous system. Watch it and then write a post offering your opinion: Free will, or brain chemistry? Or is there some way to reconcile the two?

Discussion 3 -

As we study about human development, our focus turns to change and stability! Do people's personalities ever really change? Or are we destined to make similar choices throughout our lives? Alix Spiegel (2016) has written Invisibilia: Is Your Personality Fixed, Or Can You Change Who You Are? This article explores the question through the dramatic example of a man in prison for a heinous crime.

Read the article, then join the discussion. Pick one position-EITHER stability OR change-and provide a rationale for your choice. You can also learn more about personality on page 3.12 in Chapter 3 of our webtext.

To receive full credit, remember also to write 2 posts in the discussion: one original and a response to another student. Your original should be at least 7 sentences and your reply should be 4 sentences.

Discussion 4 -

It's time to practice your focus and memory! For this discussion, you are going to watch a video that has a memory and attention game. It is VERY important that you understand the instructions.

The memory game is going to test your memory of the alphabet and your attention. If you do not understand the instructions, then pause and replay the video before going on with the game. If you need to write out the alphabet and have that in front of you, then you can do that too.

Watch the Nat Geo Maintain Your Focus video and play along.

Be sure to write down your results!

In the discussion share what you learned about your memory. Start your discussion post by sharing how you performed. Did you get most of the words right, or not? Did you notice other details or did you miss them? What did you learn about your memory from this experience?

To receive full credit, remember also to write 2 posts in the discussion: one original and a response to another student.

Discussion 5 -

For this week's discussion, we will explore psychological disorders through an unfamiliar lens. Please select a disorder from the list below that you are not familiar with, meaning you or another person you know does not have this disorder. In other words, select a disorder that you are curious about and would like to know more. In your response post:

Identify the disorder that you selected.

Write about what characterizes that disorder (what are the symptoms), and

Describe what makes you curious about this disorder.

Choose from this list of disorders:

Substance Use Disorder

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Insomnia Disorder

Agoraphobia

Dyslexia

Anorexia

Autism

Learning about a disorder that you not familiar with can help you to understand the range of disorders that are present in modern day society. It can also give you an idea of the various ways in which psychological disorders affect others.

Note: If you are already familiar with these disorders, you can either choose one to research and learn more about OR you can choose a different disorder.

Emotions are powerful responses! Sometimes emotions can find themselves in the workplace. A sales person with intense passion can convince someone to make a purchase. On the other hand, an angry manager can deliver an unfair review as their emotions get brought into the workplace. In this discussion, you are asked to help your team to understand and manage their emotions in the workplace.

Review the following article: Like it Or Not, Emotions Will Drive the Decisions You Make Today.

Assume that you are a team leader, and your team is under a deadline to get a lot done. You have noticed that some of your team members tend to get overwhelmed and make emotional decisions. Other team members seem to thrive in those situations and are motivated by the deadline.

Based upon this article, make a list of things you can do as a manager to help your team to understand and manage their emotions so they all can be productive. For instance, what could you teach them about emotions? How would you pair people to work together? What would help them to learn about their emotions so they can be productive in the workplace?

To receive full credit, remember also to write 2 posts in the discussion: one original and a response to another student. Your original should be at least 7 sentences and your reply should be 4 sentences.

Discussion 7 -

In the article, How Companies Can Profit from a "Growth Mindset", there are a great number of benefits to encouraging employees and team members to grow and develop their skills, talents, and competencies.

You are a new manager in a company that believes in a fixed mindset approach. Through your own professional development over the years, you have worked to develop a growth mindset for yourself. Now that you're in a leadership role, how could you go about creating change within your new department and encouraging your company to foster a growth mindset?

For instance, how would you deliver feedback to your team members that would promote a growth mindset?

Note - You can learn more about mindset and growth mindset in Chapter 7 of the webtext.

Discussion 8 -

In Chapter 8 of the webtext, you'll read an article by Maud Purcell (2016) that offers four steps in the decision-making process.

1. Clearly define the problem

2. Brainstorm possible choices

3. List the pros and cons of each choice

4. Engage your feelings as well as your intellect

In this discussion, we want you to engage in the decision-making process as it relates to earning your degree. In your post, focus on step 1 (clearly defining the problem) and step 2 (brainstorm possible choices) of the decision making process.

Answer these questions in your discussion post:

1. What problem will earning your degree solve?

2. Brainstorm three things that you can do today to start to prepare yourself for your future goals.

For example, maybe you are earning your degree at Strayer to change your career from retail to accounting. The problem that you are working to solve is how to gain the knowledge, skills, and credential that will allow you to get a job as an entry-level accountant.

Three things that I can do today to help with my goal:

1. Create a profile on linked in.

2. Network with accounting firms in my area to find out what they look for in new hires

3. Research and join a professional association for accounting

Discussion 9 -

In your discussion post, share which approach you would use to train your team in using the new software. Be sure to use EITHER operant conditioning OR observational learning. In general (just a few sentences), describe what your training would be like based on the approach. Why do you think that approach will successfully teach your team to use the new software?

In this interview, Emilia Lahti offers five specific actions you can take to build up Sisu so that you can endure and even thrive in moments of extreme stress.
