Discussion Question: Water related issues
One of the unique features of our home planet is the water that covers approximately 71% of its surface. It is life-sustaining - nourishing every plant, animal, and human cell on Earth - and plays a major role in the complex processes of Earth's climate through the water cycle. However, only about 2.78% of water on the Earth is fresh water and more than 99% of fresh water comes from ice and glaciers. In particular, for us living California, water is a big issue. During the recent historic drought in the recorded state history, water shortfall plagued California for more than five years from 2011 to 2017. All of California's 58 counties are currently under a drought emergency proclamation in 2022.
We have discussed several issues related to water piece by piece: sea level change, melting of sea ice, polar ice sheets, and glaciers, changes in the frequency and intensity of extreme weathers such as hurricanes and droughts, oceans as a major carbon sink, and fresh water supply, etc.
put these pieces together and show a big picture of water issues, particularly, the connections among these individual issues related to water. You may also discuss what you do, as a regular citizen, to mitigate and/or adapt to the situation we are facing.
