Term Paper
Pick a social programme (e.g., unemployment insurance, social assistance, disability insurance, maternity benefits, training for workers, ...) and write an essay on how you would evaluate it according to two or three theories of justice. You can write about more theories if you want but in my experience, it is better to focus more carefully on a smaller number of theories. At least one of the theories must be from the part of the course after the midterm (Rawls, Dworkin, Anderson, Kittay, Sen, Nussbaum).
You may not choose the minimum wage because we will be working through that example in class and you may not choose a basic income. The programme does not have to be a Canadian policy. You are free to choose one from anywhere in the world. Just make sure you can get the background material on it that you need.
Your essay should include a section describing the programme. You should also have a discussion on the efficiency implications of the programme. Is there a reason based on economic efficiency for the programme to exist (i.e, it is solving a market failure)? You should then briefly describe the main content of your two theories of justice (you are just aiming for the key points in this section, focusing on the elements that you will want to bring up in your evaluation of the programme). Finally, you should construct an argument about whether the programme would be viewed as just under each of your theories.
