One alternative to the SDLC method of system development is the Joint Application Development method (JAD). The JAD uses a combination of developers, end-users, and clients in intense workshops or lengthy meetings to develop the software (TavtaSoft, 2015). This development methodology aims to involve the clients and end-users that focus on resolving business problems rather than technical details. Although this methodology is used mostly for business systems, it is sometimes used in software development (IT Knowledge Portal, n.d.). In comparison to SDLC, the JAD methodology requires fewer interactions. However, in similarity, both methodologies can seem lengthy in the entire process.

Some of the advantages of the JAD methodology is that it allows for large amounts of high-=quality information to be produced in development in a short period of time and allows a forum to explore multiple points of view on a singular topic (TavtaSoft, 2015). Some of the disadvantages include the longer time it takes to begin execution since strategic planning and scheduling availability is involved. Additionally, this approach requires trained and experienced personnel for the effective implementation of the entire project (TavtaSoft, 2015).

This methodology is one that I am familiar with personally, as my company is currently participating in this methodology to develop and implement a new CMMS system. Our company has several workshops both in person and by phone to transfer data and test user application design. The benefits we have found in this methodology is that the software is customized on an ongoing basis to suit individual business process needs as well as involves perspectives from the business and ease of access for the end users.
