  1. Discussion of your client organization. For example, what is the business goals/missions of your client organization? What is the nature of their business? Do they have a Human Resource Department? What is their general management structure? You could also include a brief history of the organization, major products and/or services, major customers or demographics the company targets and any other notable facts regarding the organization.
  2. Discussion of the overall purpose and need for the project. That is, what is the goal of the project? What issue (or issues) does the project seek to address? Why is this project worth doing? How will it contribute to our knowledge of the human resource management?
  3. Theoretical Background

This section of the project serves the same function as a literature review. Basically, the author provides a theoretical background in which the project is taking place, i.e., a connection to the larger scheme of knowledge. For example, if a student were doing a project on developing recruiting brochure in the client organization, the author would have a section that provides literature review about the topic of recruitment or employer branding.

Project Planning
This section describes in detail the complete nature of the project. It addresses questions such as:

  1. What will be done (tasks, duties, assignments, objective)?
  2. How will the project deliverable(s) be accomplished? In other words, what information, data, tools or techniques will be used?
  3. What are the timelines/deadlines?
  4. What relevant stakeholders are involved directly and indirectly in this project? For example, in addition to the client representatives (e.g., HR manager), does it involve coordination with several other stakeholders (e.g., employees, line managers, VPs, executives, etc) in the organization in order to be successful? If so, which ones?
  5. Project Implementation

Discusses in detail what actually happened during the course of the project, such as:

  1. Information utilized (data, interviews, surveys, etc.)
  2. Detailed discussion of the steps in the process (tasks, duties, assignments, meetings, interviews, research, committee review, etc.)
  3. Detailed discussion of the output from your applied project
  4. Reflections & Recommendations
  5. Includes a critical analysis of the project (successes, failures, etc.) and especially your reflections about how the applied project helps your client organization achieve their business goals/missions/strategies, from a strategic human resource management perspective.
  6. Discuss your specific use of HR skills or knowledge in the applied project. Explain how your on the job experience in this project has changed your understanding of Strategic Human Resource Management.
  7. Also includes, in some way, the answer to the question so what? How did the project relate to the knowledge about recruiting, selection, and training, etc.
  8. Describe the most motivating/discouraging/challenging aspects of the applied project.
