Padilla defines internalized oppression and internalized racism as "the turning upon ourselves, our families, and our people--the distressed patterns of behavior that result from the racism and oppression of the majority society. Internalized racism is directed more specifically at one's racial or ethnic group."

The article then provides discussion of the reasons groups engage in internalized oppression and racism; how the behavior is generally expressed in the Latino community; and how it is reflected in the law.
