As the nurse supervisor, a teaching moment would be needed for both Nurse Jim and Nurse Lope, though in separate rooms and separate times. Discussing with Nurse Jim about time management, appropriate Pyxis dispensing procedures, and educating on requesting support when needed would take priority. A return demonstration of removing medication in the proper way from a Pyxis would be required. Nurse Lope would receive education on timeliness of medication administration as it pertains to giving medication several hours past due/close to similar doses as well as administering medication for other staff. I would even go as far as asking each person in turn to train staff on the correct procedures/policies so that they feel that each issue was more of a learning moment rather than an accusatory punishment. Watch one, do one, teach one has been an effective means of educating staff in my experience.
