Purpose

The purpose of this essay is to assess the effectiveness of rhetorical strategies and techniques. You will demonstrate to me (your instructor) your understanding of rhetorical appeals and devices and their use in language.

Audience:

Professor ABC: They know and understand the text you are using.
They are looking for your ability to think critically about rhetoric and language.
They are strict on grammar, format, vocab, and direct language--no empty words.
Task

Use the reading "Mom by Irina Reyna to discuss how the author uses rhetorical appeals/devices/choices. You will analyze their rhetoric by discussing the impact and effectiveness of their language and examples on their target audience. To accomplish this, you must identify a specific argument. A general audience, such as young people or moms, will result in a deduction of points. As you attempt to analyze the rhetoric focus in on the examples and language the speakers uses to connect to their audience.

Your goal for this paper is to discuss three rhetorical appeals (logos, ethos, pathos, or kairos) and analyze the effectiveness of their use in the speaker's overall argument. If you cannot find all three within your text, you may analyze other rhetorical devices discussed in the lectures. Yes, your argument will sound very repetitive.

To strengthen your argument, you must include at least 3 citations from your reading. All citations must follow the quote sandwich we discussed in class. Do not define any of the rhetorical appeals throughout your essay.
