Assignment:

I'm going to pick on the UK in the assignment as I often do when discussing the core because it is English speaking. The example of Britain First, however, has strong analogies throughout the core areas of Western (e.g. France and the Netherlands), Central (e.g. Germany), and Southern (e.g. Italy) Europe. Outside of Europe, you find weaker analogies in places like Japan, Canada, and the US.

I'd like your group to go through the website of Britain First, a political group in the UK largely organized around issues of immigration, and family and "culture" as it relates to immigration. Linking family, cultural institutions like well-organized religious bodies, and ideas of foreign-ness is not something uniquely right-wing or conservative. Rather, it seems to be common across many strata in core societies. I'd like your group to:

  • Describe Britain First's stance on migration to the UK,
  • Summarize how Britain First connects "family values" and Christianity to its stance on migration, and
  • Speculate on how population dynamics in the UK might account for Britain First's arguments and/or the popularity of their arguments.

You can obviously cut and paste relevant parts of Britain First's website to address the first two bullet points. But I'd like you to actually discuss what the various passages you identify mean. What is this group all about? Don't worry about having a lot of text to submit; I want you to engage in a lot of discussion because only lengthy discussion of the first two bullets will make addressing the third bullet meaningful.
