Essay 1 - Narration - The Literacy Autobiography.
Type a thesis-based essay discussing literacy development, language acquisition and education in general. You are expected to develop a thesis, provide reasons and evidence for your thesis. Utilize your personal experience learning to think, speak, read and write, and the articles, "Learning to Read And Write," by Frederick Douglass and "Two Languages in Mind, But Just One in the Heart," by Louise Erdrich for those purposes.
Use information from relevant handouts, previous activities and discussions; and your draft to help you construct your essay. Structure your essay to include the following:
Introduction Topic; Thesis; Method Statement. Remember that your thesis should be stated clearly at the beginning and restated several times in the essay.
NOTE: A Background / Reflection about the topic can be included in your introduction or at the beginning of your body.
Body This should include the elaboration / discussion of reasons for your thesis; Evidence for your reasons must be obtained from the readings & your experience. Your account of your experiences should use narration rhetoric. It should be sequential - it should have a beginning, a middle and an end.
Conclusion: Summary of Main Points & Review Statement answering the question, "What did you do in this essay?" i.e. What did you discuss? What did you argue? How did you support your thesis?
