Assignment:

Prompt

A monopoly (illegal in the USA) controls pricing completely. In contrast, the ability to price discriminate (which is legal) determines who has to pay what price. For this discussion question, use the following questions to expand upon your answers to these concepts:

1. Write one paragraph providing an example from your life where price discrimination caused you to pay one price and someone else a different price. Remember that we are discussing legal price discrimination; any examples of illegal discrimination will be deducted points since it does not address the topic.

2. Write one paragraph examining why a business would be willing to sacrifice profits and lower the price of its products. The 2021 movie, House of Gucci, shows that the business was willing to sell cheaper knock-offs to profit from a market that could not afford the store brand level of pricing. Is there a clear rationale that can be seen between Gucci and other brands that might use the same tactics in pricing? (Make sure you support your opinion with academic resources such as journal articles found on the HCCC Library website databases under research.)

3. Write one paragraph reflecting upon your customer demands for Name Brands, Generics, or even Knock-offs. Are you influenced by pricing, the ability to get price discounts, or some other factor that makes you want to buy one over the other? As this is a personal reflection, all response posts should be directed towards questions 1 or 2, not the personal reflection.
