Assignment:

Prophecy

Abraham Joshua Heschel had very specific ideas about what it means to be a prophet, and this question asks you to use his ideas to shape your essay. Specifically, you must spend your first paragraph discussing Heschel's definition of a prophet (in his reading, not my lecture, as I want you to focus on close reading) and the ways in which he understood prophecy as relevant to the Civil Rights movement. For your next three paragraphs, choose three additional writers (from our class) who could be identified as prophets in light of the attributes Heschel discusses. Be as specific as possible and be sure to make specific connections to what Heschel actually says.
