One of the ?rst results Galileo reported after he began to study the planets with his telescope was that there were mountains on the moon. This "observation," however, was not as straightforward as it might seem. The mountains Galileo claimed to have seen were his interpretation of the patterns of light and dark that he actually saw when focusing his telescope on the moon.
