Question

Mrs. Crandall teaches English Literature 10. It's her prep block now. In planning her units for next semester, she decides to teach a unit around the book, To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee. In light of current events she is certain it will present themes and topics which are real life and which match students' interests. The book discusses themes such as racial inequality, poverty, and gender roles. It's important for her to have an idea of what students may already know about some of these topics so that she can accurately determine what skills she wants to teach in this unit. If some of her students have a lot of knowledge around these themes, she wants to make sure she extends the learning for them. If other students have little knowledge, she wants to build in time for pre-teaching skills for that group. Mrs. Crandall will administer a pre-test/inventory just before the unit begins. She will make adjustments to student learning targets after she has that information.
