Assignment:
In Carl Sagan's 1990s text, "Does Truth Matter?," Sagan discusses the prevalence of pseudoscience vs. actual science. Today, more than ever it seems, we see a lot of people promoting pseudoscientific ideas all over media, both social and broadcast. What do we make of this plethora of misinformation? How do we counter those who promote falsities as "truth"? How does an understanding of the scientific process help us to determine when someone is selling us untruths?
Sagan writes, "As amusing as some of pseudoscience may seem, as confident as we may be that we would never be so gullible as to be swept up by such a doctrine, we know it's happening all around us" (9).
What specific examples of today's pseudoscience can you name? How can you tell credible information from non-credible? These and the questions above are merely to get you thinking about how to respond to Sagan's article and to relate it to our present day.
The above story criticizes the metanarratives or traditional "truths" that have been used to shape society and the way we see people.
