Creating a Research Paper with References and Sources
The Assignment:
Using an Online Bibliography Tool to Create a List of Sources
Instructions: Assume you are using a computer or mobile device that does not have Word but has Internet access. To make use of time between classes, you use an online bibliography tool to create a list of sources that you can copy and paste into the Works Cited pages of a research paper that is due tomorrow.
Perform the following tasks:
1. Run a browser. Search for the text, online bibliography tool, using a search engine. Visit several of the online bibliography tools and determine which you would like to use to create a list of sources. Navigate to the desired online bibliography tool.
2. Use the online bibliography tool to enter list of sources shown below (Figure 2-81): Alverez, Juan and Tracy Marie Wilson. Radon in the Home. Chicago: Martin Publishing, 2017. Print.
Buchalski, Leonard Adam. Radon and Your Health. Los Angeles: Coastal Works, 2017. Print.
Johnson, Shantair Jada. "Radon Facts." Environment Danger Aug. 2017. Web. 31 Aug. 2017.
Slobovnik, Vincent Alexander. The Radon Guide. Aug. 2017. Course Technology. Web. 18 Sept. 2017.
Wakefield, Ginger Lynn and Bethany Olivia Ames. "Radon Removal Systems." Living Well Today Aug. 2017. Web. 3 Oct. 2017.
Zhao, Shen Li. Radon Testing Procedures. Sept. 2017. Course Technology. Web. 8 Sept. 2017.
3. If requested by your instructor, replace the name in one of the sources above with your name.
4. Search for another source that discusses radon issues in the home. Add that source.
5. Copy and paste the list of sources into a Word document.
6. Save the document with the file name, Expand 2-1 Radon Issues Sources. Submit the document in the format specified by your instructor.
7. Which online bibliography tools did you evaluate? Which one did you select to use and why? Do you prefer using the online bibliography tool or Word to create sources? Why? What differences, if any, did you notice between the list of sources created with the online bibliography tool and the lists created when you use Word?
Lab 1: Preparing a Short Research Paper
Problem: You are a college student currently enrolled in an introductory English class. Your assignment is to prepare a short research paper (300-350 words) in any area of interest to you. The requirements are that the paper be presented according to the MLA documentation style and have three references. At least one of the three references must be from the web. You prepare the paper shown in Figure 2-82, which discusses wearable devices.
Perform the following tasks:
1. Run Word. If necessary, display formatting marks on the screen.
2. Modify the Normal style to the 12-point Times New Roman font.
3. Adjust line spacing to double.
4. Remove space below (after) paragraphs.
5. Update the Normal style to reflect the adjusted line and paragraph spacing.
6. Create a header to number pages.
7. Type the name and course information at the left margin. If requested by your instructor, use your name and course information instead of the information shown in Figure 2-82a. Center and type the tide.
8. Set a first-line indent to one-half inch for paragraphs in the body of the research paper.
9. Type the research paper as shown in Figures 2-82a and 2-82b. Change the bibliography style to MLA. As you insert citations, enter their source information (shown in Figure 2-82c). Edit the citations so that they are displayed according to Figures 2-82a and 2-82b.
10. At the end of the research paper text, press the ENTER key and then insert a manual page break so that the Works Cited page begins on a new page. Enter and format the works cited tide (Figure 2-82c). Use Word to insert the bibliographical list (bibliography).
11. Check the spelling and grammar of the paper at once.
12. Save the document using the file name, Lab 2-1 Wearable Devices Paper. Submit the document, shown in Figure 2-82, in the format specified by your instructor.
13. Read the paper in Print Layout view. Switch to Read mode and scroll through the pages. Do you prefer reading in Print Layout view or Read mode? Why? In Read mode, which of the page colors do you like best and why?
